As you likely know, a shuffle has occurred in NBC late night programming. Conan O’Brien left the “Tonight” show and Jay Leno will return to the 11:35 pm spot.

In his closing statement Conan made a comment that we can all remember. “I hate cynicism,” he said. “It’s my least favorite quality and it doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.”

Many of us have experienced disappointments and setbacks in our careers and personal lives. We sometimes feel that we are not being treated fairly or as we deserve.

Over the course of a lifetime these kinds of things will occur. What emotion we let dominate is our choice. Cynicism can be toxic and contagious. It can spread throughout both our own lives and those of our friends and colleagues. It generates bitterness and negativity.

The next time you find yourself feeling cynical, remember Conan’s message. A serious point from a comedienne. Thanks Conan.
