A Startling ConceptA friend of mine has put off learning golf because he feels he will not be good when he starts. He is used to excelling at what he does.

This belief is stopping him from attempting something that he may grow to enjoy.

Studies show that this fear of not being the best (failure in their eyes) or having to know most of how to do something before you start is common. It is more prevalent among females.

This fear is one reason why many do not major in math or science. They are afraid they will not get their usual high marks in these subjects. Instead, they major in areas where they are confident they will excel.

Simon Bailey, author and speaker, says, “You don’t have to be great to start but you have to start to be great.”

What are you putting off? What is really stopping you? What will you gain when you start? When you finish?
