I live across the street from Debbie Phelps. I talked with her the Saturday before the Olympics. She is a genuine and inspiring woman who has instilled solid values in her son.

Michael is an amazing athlete who believes that anything is possible and lets nothing stop him.

In the past weeks we have also heard many other athletes talk about how their parents inspired them.

A recent article in The Baltimore Sun Discussed the supporting role that parents play in an Olympian’s success.

The AFFIRM program developed by sports psychologist, Caroline Silby, is applicable for both parents and organizational leaders.

I have modified it for business.

A  Give AFFECTION

Show appreciation to your colleagues for their efforts, even if the outcome is disappointing.

F  Be FOCUSED

Teach good goal-setting habits.

F  Be FLEXIBLE

Find out your colleagues’ goals and objectives. What is important and what will motivate them?

I  INTERACT

Interact without dominating the conversation. Listen more than you talk. Listen to both feelings that are expressed and to those that are not. This shows respect.

R  REFRAME

Keep a perspective with the bigger picture, long-term goals and other aspects of life.

M  MODEL

Be a role model. Live your life with integrity. Act in accordance with your values and beliefs.

By following these guidelines, a parent or leader can inspire others. You too can develop super stars!
