The first day of the new year reminds me of the first day of school. The books are clean and the notebooks are blank. There’s a sense of excitement with this fresh start. A new beginning.

There will be many lessons to learn, new people to meet and projects to accomplish.

It’s a great time to embrace a beginner’s mind.

  • When did you last try something new for the first time?
  • When did you invite someone new to lunch?
  • When did you admit you really didn’t know something and became curious to learn it?
  • When was the last time you were in wonder or fascinated?

Beginner’s mind opens up our world. We are free to explore, learn, make mistakes and have fun. There is no pressure to be the expert. We can use an eraser.

As you start to fill your notebooks, calendars and life, I encourage you to do so with a new mindset. And don’t forget to make time for recess!
