Recently I had the privilege of hearing former President Bill Clinton speak. He talked about what it was like to be President. He stated three things that a President must do. These are applicable whether you are running the free world or a committee.

  1. Keep your promises
  2. Be on the lookout for fires You must be able to adapt to unexpected situations and to change course as necessary.
  3. Visualize the future Have a vision and share the direction you want to go. Clarity and inspiration are important.

In addition to the three items mentioned above, he also talked about creative cooperation. People must find a way to work together to resolve difficult situations. It can even mean collaborating with different partners than one might normally work with.

Keeping your promises, being adaptable and envisioning a future state all add up to being a strong leader.

Do you have what it takes to be President?
