Fifty years ago the idea of having a national holiday to recognize Martin Luther King was unimaginable. He was seen by many as disloyal and as someone who disagreed with the status quo.

Often we confuse disloyalty and disagreement. We {or others} question our loyalty if we are not aligned with current views or our supervisors or colleagues.

Dr. King shows us that one can have other ideas and still be loyal to the organization. We can respectfully share our opinions and dreams. Others may disagree and see the conflict as threatening.

However, in expressing deep democracy as Dr. King did, all voices are heard. He inspires us to believe, dream and speak out thoughtfully and respectfully.

After all, his one voice that disagreed with the way things had been done inspired others and changed a nation. He was a loyal American whom we honor today and who modeled democracy in action.
