We often hear that life is about opening doors.

I recently read a metaphor that intrigued me. It says that our boundaries are like a door within us. When the doorknob is on the outside, we are less able to set healthy boundaries. Others control their access. They enter or exit on their timing and agenda and throw in anything they want. We are less likely to draw the line on entry.

When the knob is on the inside, we determine when the door opens and closes. We choose who we let in, at what time and for what purpose. This ability can reduce stress, create greater energy and increase productivity.

In addition to opening doors, being able to close them can be valuable in setting boundaries.
