Now that school is in full gear many of us focus on the teachers educating our kids or look back on those who influenced us.

I recently heard an educator share five keys for being a successful teacher. They also apply to being a successful leader.

  1. Enthusiasm Passion is contagious and excitement creates engagement.
  2. Personalize Determine what motivates each person and customize approaches accordingly.
  3. Communication Share expectations and give and receive feedback. Be aware of tone of voice, nonverbal cues and words.
  4. Flexibility It is important to stretch and also be able to adapt to circumstances
  5. Compassion Having empathy and understanding will go a long way toward building relationships. Helping people be the best they can be is our role.

The reality is that we are all teachers. We are just versed in different subjects. Our classrooms are in schools, organizations and daily life.

These five qualities will serve us and our students/teams. They will help all of us to succeed.
