The Kashi cereal box said, “Day of change. Seven whole grains on a mission.” A few sentences down it asked “What will you change today? I will _______________.” Clearly this space was to be completed by me.

As a coach I am glad to see personal development action plans, especially on something as ordinary and accessible as a cereal box. You no longer have to go to Amazon or the bookstore self help section. Kashi is clearly committed to its customers living a healthy lifestyle and making the choices for such a change.

Excellent companies express their philosophy in everything they do. The message is accessible to everyone. Do people know your organization’s philosophy? Can they express it or resonate with it? Think Disney: “We create happiness” or Apple’s “Think different”. Everything these organizations do supports these philosophies.

Having a message and weaving it through all that you do gives your customers a way to connect with your organization. They will likely want to do business with you if they understand your values and relate to the same ones.

Inside one of my purses is a tag that says, “Empathy makes us human.” It makes me smile every time I use it.

So next time you’re looking at the cereal box, instead of searching for the prize inside, consider the gift on the outside. Cereal could change your life!
