How superstitious are you? As Friday the 13th approaches, this subject is something to consider.

Many office buildings do not have a 13th floor. A friend of mine would not fire an employee on this date, instead opting to hold the conversation on the 12th. Perhaps you wear a lucky outfit while making a presentation or playing a sport.

Wade Boggs, the Hall of Fame baseball player, was “very superstitious” as Stevie Wonder sang. Boggs followed rituals which he believed brought him good luck. Before every game he began running seven laps at 7:17pm. He ate chicken meals prior to each game. He also caught the same number of ground balls in practice daily.

In our planning, strategy seeking, logical lives, we are uncomfortable leaving things to luck. We try to plan and script as much as possible to eliminate uncertainty. As much as we strive for predictability and control, life brings with it an element of chance or chaos. Although we make our own luck, there is still a piece that is open to the Universe.

As someone who was born on a Friday the 13th, I feel very lucky, despite how others feel about the day!
