Martha Stewart did not come to my house for Thanksgiving, but the firemen almost did. My smoke detector went off as we were cooking the turkey. Rather than panic, I called ADT, the alarm company.

Things happen when we least expect them. By staying calm and not getting alarmed, we can handle a situation better. We can think more rationally. When we are calm, it provides Reassurance to those around us and impacts the entire environment.

Often there is opportunity in a situation gone a wry. It is a wake up call. I learned that my alarm was not connected directly to the firehouse as I had thought. I now have a new smoke detector that connects directly to the fire department.

The next time you find yourself in a panicked situation or in one that surprises you, take a minute to breathe and step back. Ask, “What is the best thing for me to do now?” Being calm and doing what is within your control helps you to take one step at a time and not be alarmed.
