I am taking salsa lessons. It is both fun and challenging to be a beginner. It requires and open mind and a willingness to make mistakes.

I have learned five lessons that apply to leadership.

  1. Do the most difficult step first We learn to tackle the hardest move first so the rest will seem easy.
  2. Know your steps It is important to know your part. You must be able to move in sync; otherwise, you step on the other person’s toes.  If you lose your place, go back to the basic step.
  3. Commit to what you are doing If you do not lead with confidence or know the direction you are going, your partner will be cofused.
  4. Listen for the beat The music moves quickly. It is important to listen.
  5. Practice is important Learning new skills takes times. Practice is necessary to become an expert.

Salsa, like leadership, can be fun and exciting. You just have to learn the steps, be willing to make mistakes and practice to become proficient.
