Last week I attended a friend’s funeral. It was very sad for this dynamic and loved man passed way too early.

I was inspired by one of the eulogies which emphasized a punctuation mark. One’s birth year and death year are separated by a dash. For example, 2009-2090.

The two years represent the beginning and end of life. We do not have much control of these dates. The dash represents all the years in between. We do get to have a lot of input into the dash years.

These years are comprised by our choices.

  • Are you living how, where and with whom you want?
  • Are you doing those things which make you feel alive?
  • Are you making a difference?
  • Are you passionate about what you do?
  • Are you taking care of yourself?

The dash – a simple punctuation mark with so much meaning. What are you doing with your dash?
