While in Cost Rica last week I truly realized the importance of guides.

In Manuel Antonio National Park our guide spotted animals, taught us about them and had us listen for their sounds. We would not have even noticed them on our own, without his assistance.

On the Pacuare River our guide helped us navigate and safely run the rapids, avoiding troublesome rocks. He told me and my raft mates how to paddle and when to get down in the raft. He also taught us about the river and its history along the way.

Strong leaders are good guides. They help to navigate potential problems and discover new ones. They educate and assist others in seeing what they cannot on their own. A good leader needs to be a good explorer and a good listener.

What kind of guide are you? Do you help others navigate their way? How well do you listen? Are you able to see potential problems or discover new ones and solve them?

As my adventure vacation taught me, being a good guide is critical to navigating any path.
