When Walter Cronkite died on Friday it was the end of a broadcasting era in news.

He was the most trusted man in America. People believed him. We lived history through his broadcasts. He spoke for the nation and was its focal point. In fact, 2 of 3 households watched the lunar landing on CBS news.

What made Cronkite unique and a leader in his profession? After listening to many interviews with his colleagues, here are some thoughts:

He had dignity, composure and compassion. He was honest and plain speaking. He was the same person both on and off camera. He was comfortable in his skin. He was enthusiastic, curious and had a commitment to accuracy. He inspired and connected with people.

Ted Koppel said that he was America’s anchor. The term was actually created for Cronkite before a political convention. He held it all in place.

These are qualities that great leaders possess. To find them all in one man was his gift and our blessing. “And that’s the way it is.”
