We have all heard of the 3 R’s that are taught in school. As school begins again we can learn a lesson from an all black Chicago Charter school where 107 boys graduated and were all accepted to 4-year colleges.

Tim King, Founder and CEO, describes his success formula as ritual, respect, responsibility and relationships.

These 4 R’s created a school that did not accept excuses and expected each student to play big and give their total commitment. In addition to knowledge, the boys learned resiliency, self-confidence and self awareness.

We can apply these lessons to our organizations. They are the foundation for success.

Ritual: Rituals are powerful. What customs and ceremonies do you honor?

Respect: Civilization (and your organization) cannot function without it. How do people show respect to each other? How does your organization show respect? What are the norms and expectations?

Responsibility: How accountable do people feel for their actions? Are they walking the talk? Is there a sense of responsibility for the entire team or community and not just ourselves?

Relationships: How do we treat each other? How safe and open do we feel? What connects us and what creates barriers? How do we communicate?

These 4 R’s have laid a foundation for strong personal development and positive outcomes. Get back to basics as the school year starts. Are you and your team making the grade in the 4 R’s?
