I have been taking dancing lessons in preparation for my upcoming wedding. Dancing teaches us lessons for leading and following that we can apply in our organizations.

  1. We develop focus and clarity We need to be clear on who is leading and who is following. Otherwise we are not aligned and we step on each other’s feet. What are the expectations for each of our roles?
  2. Listen to the music The environment is constantly giving us clues to what is happening around us. Are you listening to the voices, rhythms and energy of the team and the pace of progress?
  3. Be adaptable Change is constant both at work and on the dance floor. The music varies, your partner shifts and you are doing different steps and learning new moves. How are you adapting to the changing environment in your organization?
  4. Be aware of other dancers on the floor People are always moving around us. We must interact with other departments, colleagues and competitors. How do you move in relation to them?
  5. Have fun Leadership and followership can be challenging. Keeping an energy and perspective is important. Having fun and being playful can create a mood that fosters engagement and joy, even if the topic is serious.

Dancing requires grace, energy and collaboration. Being aware of these guidelines will help you move smoothly whether you are leading or following and whether you’re on the dance floor or in the board room.
