What Can Bill Belichick Teach Us About Leadership? -- The Super Bowl champion New England Patriots went to the White House

Source: ABCNEWS.com

The Super Bowl champion New England Patriots went to the White House last week. Bill Belichick has coached the franchise to four Super Bowl victories.

I must disclose that I am a New Orleans Saints fan. Nonetheless, I can appreciate some of the coaching skills Belichick incorporates that are applicable to all organizations.

He focuses on creating a team instead of focusing on star players (Tom Brady excluded). Belichick is self-effacing and modesty is a team value. Because he believes excellence evolves and is not just acquired through raw talent, he values three key things.

1. Adaptability:

Players have to be willing to adapt because what made them the best last year may not work now under different circumstances.

2. Versatility:

Players must be able to change positions since attrition will happen. This strengthens the team and increases their flexibility.

3. Teachability:

Players who are teachable are best able to fit into the organization. Being teachable is more valuable than being perfect.

Belichick believes that when teams are built around teamwork they improve. Teams built on talent can wear out.
