Creativity. These are the places where we do our most creative thinking according to a speaker I heard recently.

Many of us think we are not creative if cannot draw, paint or decorate like Martha Stewart.

However, creativity is about sparking ideas, making connections and exploring possibilities. One reason we are more creative in these three locations is because we are open and often not focusing on solving a problem. There is space for our mind to wonder and wander. As we think about unrelated topics, an idea often surfaces to solve a situation.

I keep a pad of paper by my bed and in my car to capture these thoughts.

Try this exercise: Before you go to bed, think of a situation you want to address or ask a question that you want answered. Go to sleep. In the morning, notice any ideas that your subconscious developed. Write them down before getting out of bed.

Give yourself time to relax and play. Down time will generate the creative process. And for those of us who feel we are not being productive when we are doing nothing, know that you are working on your creativity.
